August 2008: Bag #4
This was a small model bag, as a quick test of a few things:
- Some sort of tapered overhanging flap wider than the bag body (to keep out rain)
- A slim, fixed-width zippered slip pocket separate from the main body of the bag (to put a laptop or notebook in, in the full size version)
- Lighter-weight but waterproof fabric as the liner
What worked:
- It was quick, I made it one afternoon
- The flap does overhang the main body
- The slip pocket worked and the whole process of which pieces I sew together first, second, and so on all came together
What didn't:
- I got lazy and didn't put in the zipper on the laptop pocket (which I would have had to plan ahead for more anyway)
- The way the oversized flap and the main body interact isn't very elegant and there's a bunch of visible stiching and some weird kinks in the fabric
- It's just not very useful on its own, and not that much less work than making a full-size bag. So other than saving some money on fabric, it didn't seem worth making a model-- I should just jump in and make a full-size bag next time.
